Alden, of New York, became a disciple of modern canoeing, and being a literary man he began to write of the sport. By so doing he achieved a reputation in this country similar to that of MacGregor in England, and has received the title of "Father of American canoeing."The next year, after becoming a convert to the new sport, Mr. Alden and seven others founded the New York Canoe Club. In 1881 W.L. Alden was the first commodore of the American Canoe Association at Lake George. The second commodore was Judge Nicholas Longworth of Cincinnati and the third E.B. This they have not done." Neatby went on to become Head of the History Department at the University of Saskatchewan in 1958. She received many honours and awards, including Companion of the Order of Canada (in the first year of the Order), election to the Royal Society of Canada, and several honorary degrees.
